Bakalar je zbog niske energetske vrijednosti vrlo kvalitetan izvor proteina. Ujedno potiče opuštanje, ali i dobro raspoloženje jer u njemu ima mnogo triptofana, aminokiseline potrebne za tjelesnu sintezu serotonina, takozvanog hormona sreće.
Kao i druga riba sjevernih mora, bakalar je koristan u prevenciji i liječenju brojnih bolesti. Osobito se preporuča osobama oboljelim od ateroskleroze ili bolesti srca povezane s dijabetesom.
Bakalar je bogat izvor selena i fosfora, te korisnih omega-3 masnih kiselina, stoga ima značajnu ulogu u prevenciji kardiovaskularnih bolesti. Ujedno je i dobar izvor vitamina B3, B6 i B12, koji pomažu u snižavanju povišene razine homocisteina, čimbenika rizika za bolesti srca.
Premda je kod nas ponajprije blagdansko jelo, dobrobit bakalara toliko je velika da bi se na našim trpezama trebao naći mnogo češće tijekom godine.
